Neighborhood Spotlight: Arlington, Virginia
Arlington is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in Virginia. The recent announcement by Amazon that it would be building its newest headquarters in Arlington gave an additional boost to the city’s popularity, with the headquarters employing approximately 25,000 people. Amazon’s move to Arlington will impact the area’s already vibrant residential real estate market. Home values over the long term will be positively affected by the influx of new employees (from Amazon and adjacent beneficiaries) to the region.
In the late 1700s, the land that comprises present-day Arlington was ceded to the newly formed US federal government as part of the original Federal City designed by Pierre L’Enfant. Under the direction of President Washington, the borders of the federal territory encompassed the pre-existing city of Alexandria at the District’s southern tip. However, this was short-lived. After months of debate, in 1847 the Virginia General Assembly voted to formally pass legislation to return the land that was originally ceded to form the District back to the state of Virginia. Today, Arlington’s ties to its history are still prevalent. It is home to many federal institutions such as the Pentagon and The George Bush Center for Intelligence. More than three million people visit Arlington National Cemetery each year.
Arlington is a city of vibrant and unique neighborhoods including Ballston, Clarendon/Courthouse, and Lyon Village. Living in Arlington offers its residents an urban feel with access to bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and parks. In May of 2019, Arlington was ranked the fittest city in the nation based on indicators such as exercise, healthy eating, and recreational facilities available within the community.
Many of Arlington’s neighborhoods enjoy close proximity to the Metro’s Orange and Silver Lines as well as local bus service. Arlington County also offers a network of user-friendly trails, dedicated lanes, and routes for cyclists who choose to commute to work or ride for leisure.
